Subject: 1040 st floppy drive problem

Can anyone comment on a problem I have with my Atari 1040 ST floppy drive?  I
get occasional, random failures, like inability to load a program, and screw-ups

when writing to disc (even something as simple as entering a score into a game
score-table).  Sometimes there are bombs on the screen.

The problem seems to be associated with the initial activity when accessing a
disc.  For instance, I can prevent trouble when writing to disc, by first
removing the disc, manually rotating the media a little (via the central metal
section), and reinserting the disc.

Could it be that the disc position sensing is not working properly?  I had the
drive checked out on an exerciser, and it looked OK.  Certainly, head
alignment and rotational speed were well within spec.  If there's something
(relatively) simple I can try, then please let me know.  I'm inclined to think
that replacing the drive is probably the quickest solution!

You will use whatever amount of RAM is already installed in your machine as

Then you should *not* do it, unless you already have a socket installed for
your CPU. Installation involves removal of the 68000 - if you do not
exactly know what you are doing, you might easily kill the board in the
process. You should also have a very good desoldering station.

If in doubt, then have the board installed by an expert!

There is now a version of GCC for the amiga with libraries. Don't ask me how
good it is cos I've only seen it on a archive and do not have an Amiga.

Ok, I have played through Dungeon Master and I am at the end, you know I'm
sealed off down there with Chaos, I've destroyed all the flame-sloth things
and the dragon and I have the firestaff etc....


My question is simple :  HOW do I kill Chaos?  I know it's something about
fluxcaging/fusing but I have been fighting him for at least 5-10 hours (no,
not all at once) with no effect.  Someone help please, I'm running out of
food/water...

I need something like the equivalent of the Macintosh multifinder for Atari ST.
Does it exist ?

Or perhaps someone can find another way of solving my problem :
I would like to use a Lisp interpreter which does not allow to call an editor.
And I don't want to quit the interpreter, then to load the editor, etc...
for each modification of the source.

Hi, I recently saw an ad in a friend's computer magazine for a new
Supra modem, something like the Supra 2400 PLUS, it says it has
asynchronous 300,1200,2400 bps (that's the usual I suppose), 4800 bps
with MNP 5, and 9600 bps with v32.bis or v42.bis (can't remember which).
So can I actually pay the CHEAP $130 bucks for this modem and dial up
my school net at 9600 baud?  Sounds like a good deal to me, I know that
my school dial-in IS this new v32(42).bis thing, someone tell me, 9600
baud would be awesome for only $130 mail order...

You're confusing several different Supra modems.

The 2400plus doesn't do V.32. It is a 2400 modem with MNP5 and
V.42/V.42bis, which provide error correction and (potentially) data
compression. Theoretically, V.42bis can provide throughout of up to
9600bps, but in practice the gain from compression is modest, especially
if you're transferring compressed data (ARC, LZH or ZOO files). The
2400plus lists for about $199 and retails for about $130. (This message
comes to you through a 2400plus).

V.32 is a standard that provides a real 9600bps connection; the protocols
that provide error connection and data compression can be piggybacked onto
that. Supra recently announced a V.32 modem and a V.32bis modem (14,400).
The list prices are $349.95 and $399.95 respectively. I think BBS sysops
can buy the V.32 model for about $199 under Supra's sysop program.
Incidentally, the new models also support fax transmissions, but Supra
doesn't have fax software for the ST.

This has never happened to me, but a friend of mine was experiencing similar
problems.

His solution was to record the sysex at a fast tempo, and then play it back
at a slower one.  You can also take it to the extreme and use the "half
speed" function on your sysex track, if you don't mind it taking longer so
send over.

(Btw, you're not sending over entire sample dumps, are you?  You're really
asking for trouble, in that case.)

Looks like it's MiNT 0.91, the most recent that was posted to comp.binaries.

I did a little bit of half-baking on MiNTlib before the ski lifts started
running. (Now my weekends are devoted to an attempt to break some bones
before the snow melts.) MiNTlib isn't the sort of project that you can
work on with 15 minutes here, 30 minutes there, so now I just have a bunch
of untouched files eating up disk space.

It's probably a bug in VDIFAST.A; not all of the VDI functions have been
extensively tested. It would be great if you could mail me a little program
demonstrating how you called the function (to make sure that we're all
working off the same function description!) I can forward it to the author.

Also, could you post your rewrite that uses vdicall? That way everybody can
use your code while waiting for Ian to fix the GEMFAST bug.

Just a note to let folks know that there is at -least- a problem with one of
the example programs that comes with the 1.33i release and STe computers.

I installed the 1.33i release on an STe last night, during the local MAST+
programmers meeting.  We then 'tested' the program by clicking on the makefile
in the example programs folder.  It compiled and ran the test programs without
a  hitch.  However, the 'minicolr' pallette changer doesn't work with STe
machines.  I didn't go through the code enough to learn whether it was a
special call or not; I assume that the program makes assumptions about the
color pallette information (which is 4 bits for the STe vs. 3 bits for the ST).

It -did- produce an interesting Moire pattern before locking up though. :)

I have but a lowly single-sided internal drive, and am desperately in need
of an update to double-sided. Can anyone give me any advice as to the best
or cheapest way to go about this. Can I simply buy a external drive, or must
I fit a new internal. What price an internal, can I fit it myself.

I'm just recently found a way to access a.a.u.e, and now I am wondering what
things I should get a copy of and what I shouldn't bother with due to memory
constraints. I have a 1040fm (1 meg), and a 52 meg hard drive, so space is
not a problem, memory is.
I have heard several times that gcc needs 4 megs, so I shouldn't bother with
it. I am interested in TeX. Can I run it in 1 meg? Which files do I need?
I have a 9 pin & a 24 pin printer at home. Am I just wasting my time until I
get a laser printer?
I would also love to get the ksh that several people have mentioned - so far I
have only seen bash.
I am also interested in MiNT - is there any use when I only have 1 meg?
Anyone have a list of 'must-have' utils for the ST? There are so many files
and I only have access for 1 term (until end of april) unless I can get another
account somewhere else. Is there a good VI for the ST? I have STevie, but it
seems somewhat slow (screen updates) even running quickST. I will soon be
upgrading to TOS 1.4. I have heard that there are still a few bugs with it.
Are there any patches/fixes around, and if so, what are they?

As a side note, what happened to MegaMax? Haven't seen anything from them since
my upgrade to Laser C. Did they go belly up and/or drop the ST? Is there a
version out there later than 2.0?

Question about the SST. Saw an add in Atari User recently. However, it wasn't
clear what the board comes with, if anything. Does it include a 68030? Any
memory?

Hope I can finally get some of these longstanding questions answered.

Well.. I bought mine as an 8Mb/40Mb machine, but it had 2Mb/40Mb on the
bottom. Do you think Attari hadn't got any high-end machines in stock when I
bought mine :-)?

Mine was the same, but I imeadiately repartitioned the drive using the HDX
tools to make two partitions of reasonable size.

I did ! I remember the black box, with separate keyboard, I think. I saw it

Does anyone have a working copy of this?
I bought one a while ago and I could see all the files and display them as text
on the screen but copying them or trying to use them in Cyber Studio resulted
in disk errors.  The guy at the local store checked with the distributor but
the entire batch was foobar.  He then sent it back to Antic for me but
that was when they disappeared off the face of the earth.
I located another copy in Toronto last fall but it was foobar, too.
